Three individuals were taken to the hospital following a morning apartment fire in east London, Ontario. The incident, believed to have been triggered by a mattress fire, resulted in smoke inhalation injuries for the affected individuals.
The London Fire Department responded to the emergency call at 980 Cheapside St. around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, where they encountered a second-story apartment ablaze. Captain Mike Reed described the scene, stating that smoke was visible on the Cheapside side of the building. Firefighters entered the premises from the second-story balcony, finding light smoke and minimal heat, indicating that the fire had been largely contained by the occupants.
Upon investigation by fire prevention officers, it was observed that the burnt mattress, although the exact cause remains officially undetermined, likely served as the ignition point for the fire. The building’s superintendent shared her belief with CTV News that a candle may have been the source of the mattress fire.
In response to the emergency, London Transit provided a bus to shelter and assist those temporarily displaced by the incident, ensuring their comfort and safety during the situation.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, highlighting the effectiveness of the emergency response efforts in mitigating the potential risks posed by the fire.
