The 16th annual Steps for Life fundraising walk, organized by Threads of Life, recently took place at Springbank Park in London, Ontario. This significant event is part of a nationwide effort to support individuals and families affected by workplace tragedies, including fatalities, life-altering injuries, and occupational diseases.
Event Highlights and Achievements
The London Region’s Steps for Life walk saw approximately 190 participants who gathered to raise awareness and funds under the banner of workplace safety. This year, the event was particularly memorable as it set a new fundraising record for the London chapter, with over $41,000 collected so far.
Personal Impact and Community Support
Elaine Keunen, this year’s family spokesperson, shared a poignant story about her 17-year-old son Adam, who tragically lost his life in a workplace accident at an auto recyclers facility. By speaking at the event, Elaine aims to honor her son’s memory and emphasize the importance of workplace safety. “Every worker in Canada has the right to return home safely to their family at the end of the workday. Unfortunately, this wasn’t our family’s experience,” she remarked.
National Efforts and Achievements
Since its inception in 2009, the London Region Steps for Life walk has raised nearly $300,000. Overall, Steps for Life events across Canada have collectively raised more than $8,800,000. These funds support Threads of Life’s peer support programs, which provide crucial assistance to families coping with the aftermath of workplace tragedies.
