Beginning next Monday, drivers should brace themselves for delays as a long-term construction endeavor commences on a portion of Highbury Avenue North, slated to persist until December. Phase 3C of the East London Link and Municipal Infrastructure Improvements projects will kick off the construction efforts.
This will entail lane restrictions along Highbury Avenue North, stretching from Oxford Street East to the north limit of the Highbury Avenue North overpass. Additionally, reduced lanes will be enforced along Oxford Street East, spanning from just a few meters east of the Highbury Avenue intersection to near Wistow Street.
Despite these constraints, the city ensures that Highbury Avenue North and Oxford Street East will remain accessible to traffic, albeit with diminished lanes in each direction, until approximately December 2024. Preparatory measures, including the setup of traffic control systems, will be undertaken by crews this week in anticipation of the forthcoming major construction phase.
For pedestrians, the city plans to install wayfinding signs within the vicinity to facilitate navigation through the construction zone. Sidewalk access will be upheld on at least one side of the road throughout the construction period.
Drivers are forewarned to anticipate delays and are urged to explore alternative routes using navigation apps such as Waze and Google Maps whenever feasible. Furthermore, some LTC stops along Highbury Avenue North and Oxford Street East will be affected, prompting transit riders to consult the LTC website for the latest updates.
Despite the construction, businesses within the area will remain operational and accessible.
The construction of phase 3C of the East London Link project will be executed in two segments to ensure continuous road access and efficient completion of necessary tasks. The second section is scheduled for later in the spring or summer, focusing on servicing utilities and conducting off-road works on Highbury Avenue North, south of the overpass and just west of the Dundas Street intersection.
