At Oakridge Secondary School in London, Ont., the athletic department is preparing a shrine to honor football star Taylor Elgersma. His old jersey, helmet, and photos will be displayed as a tribute to the Hec Crighton-winning quarterback who once graced the school’s football field.

“We talk about it daily in the athletic and phys-ed departments—just how proud we are of his accomplishments,” said Mike Darling, Elgersma’s former high school coach.

While playing for the Oakridge Oaks, Elgersma earned the prestigious Greg Anderson Award, given to the best student-athlete, football player, leader, and community member.

“He was the captain of both the hockey and football teams and contributed so much to the school and the community,” said Darling. “I was incredibly proud of him.”

Elgersma describes the past few weeks as a “wild ride” after competing in major U.S. events, including the College Gridiron Showcase, the Tropical Bowl in Orlando, and most recently, the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

“The culture of the South really stands out,” said Elgersma, who is the reigning U Sports Hec Creighton winner and played quarterback for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. “The Mardi Gras parade and the way football is viewed down there are something special.”

At the Senior Bowl, Elgersma roomed with Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who is projected to be a top-three-round NFL draft pick. The experience allowed both players to learn and grow together.

“We would echo our calls back and forth, talk through reads and progressions,” said Elgersma. “It was all about supporting each other, not viewing each other as competition.”

Standing at 6’6, Elgersma has drawn comparisons to Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. His impressive arm strength was on full display when he connected on a 43-yard pass during the third quarter.

“Practices throughout the week are crucial for scouts, but you want to step up and deliver in big moments,” Elgersma said. “I’m definitely excited we hit that one.”

Elgersma now looks forward to taking his next steps toward a professional football career.
