
March is off to a frigid start, prompting the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) to issue a Cold Weather Alert from 7 p.m. Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday.
During this period, temperatures are expected to range between -10°C and -12°C, with wind chills dropping to -20°C, creating hazardous conditions for those outdoors.
Cold Weather Alert Criteria
A Cold Weather Alert is issued when any of the following conditions are met:
- Temperatures drop to -15°C or lower
- Wind chills reach -20°C or lower
- Environment and Climate Change Canada issues a “Cold Alert” or “Cold Warning”
Cold Weather Safety Tips
To stay safe in extreme cold, MLHU advises:
✅ Stay indoors as much as possible in heated buildings
✅ Dress in layers, including a toque and mittens, when going outside
✅ Drink warm fluids, but avoid caffeine and alcohol
✅ Limit strenuous outdoor activities to prevent overexertion in the cold
Residents are encouraged to take extra precautions and check on vulnerable individuals, including seniors and those without adequate shelter.
