March is off to a frigid start, prompting the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) to issue a Cold Weather Alert from 7 p.m. Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday.

During this period, temperatures are expected to range between -10°C and -12°C, with wind chills dropping to -20°C, creating hazardous conditions for those outdoors.

Cold Weather Alert Criteria

A Cold Weather Alert is issued when any of the following conditions are met:

  • Temperatures drop to -15°C or lower
  • Wind chills reach -20°C or lower
  • Environment and Climate Change Canada issues a “Cold Alert” or “Cold Warning”

Cold Weather Safety Tips

To stay safe in extreme cold, MLHU advises:

Stay indoors as much as possible in heated buildings
Dress in layers, including a toque and mittens, when going outside
Drink warm fluids, but avoid caffeine and alcohol
Limit strenuous outdoor activities to prevent overexertion in the cold

Residents are encouraged to take extra precautions and check on vulnerable individuals, including seniors and those without adequate shelter.
