A widespread rainfall and freezing rain warning is currently in effect across a large portion of the region, including London, Middlesex, eastern Elgin County, as well as Huron-Perth, Grey, Bruce, and extending to Toronto and Ottawa.

CTV News London Meteorologist Julie Atchison reported that the region is expecting between 30 to 50 millimeters of rain, with thunderstorms expected later in the evening and continuing overnight. The combination of freezing rain and heavy rainfall has led to downed powerlines, icy tree branches, and washouts, resulting in several road closures throughout the area.

Atchison explained that temperatures have been slow to rise, which is contributing to extensive freezing rain, especially around London, where the temperature is currently -1°C. As the evening progresses, the freezing rain will transition to rain, though the freezing rain may continue in areas like Kitchener-Waterloo and Mount Forest, where temperatures are rising more slowly.

There have also been a few thunderstorms in the area, and these could continue into the evening. As the rain begins to taper off by tomorrow morning, occasional showers may persist. Temperatures are expected to rise throughout the late afternoon and evening, with London reaching around 6°C by midnight. Gusty southeast winds are expected, with gusts reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour.

Road Closures Due to Weather Conditions:

  • Proudfoot Lane is temporarily closed from Oxford Street West to Sugarcreek Trail due to flooding.

  • 14 Mile Road near Elginfield, between Highbury Ave and Clarke Road, is closed due to downed trees and hydro lines.

  • Rogers Road from John Wise Line to Conservation Line near Aylmer is closed due to downed hydro poles. No through traffic allowed.

  • Bartley Sideroad near Port Elgin, at the northeast end along the riverbank, is closed due to washouts.

London Area Forecast:

  • Wednesday Night: Showers with the risk of a thunderstorm. Rainfall amounts expected to be between 20 to 30 mm. Winds from the southeast at 30 km/h, gusting to 60 km/h, shifting southwest overnight with gusts up to 50 km/h. Temperature will rise to 14°C by morning.

  • Thursday: A few showers will end in the morning, followed by a mix of sun and clouds. Winds from the southwest at 30 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h. High temperature expected to be 18°C.
