Middlesex-London has confirmed its first case of measles for 2025, following a surge of cases in neighboring areas. The Middlesex-London Health Unit reported the case on Monday, linking it to recent measles exposures in London and Strathroy that have been ongoing since late January.

According to the health unit, the individual likely contracted the virus while visiting a nearby region with reported cases.

All individuals in the Middlesex-London area who may have been exposed to the virus have been notified, the health unit confirmed.

Measles outbreaks were declared earlier this year in surrounding areas, with Southwestern Public Health—serving Oxford and Elgin counties—reporting 136 confirmed cases since October 2024. Outbreaks were also declared in Grand Erie Public Health’s jurisdiction, covering Haldimand, Norfolk, Brant County, and Brantford.

In addition to the cases in Middlesex-London, measles has also been reported in Chatham-Kent and Grey Bruce, according to Public Health Ontario.

While the current transmission within Middlesex-London is limited, Alex Summers, the medical officer of health for the region, emphasized the importance of ensuring immunity. “It is critical that everyone takes this opportunity to ensure they are immune to this virus,” he said.
