London Police Chief Thai Truong is responding to growing public concern following the suspension of a city police officer who is currently under criminal investigation by the Ottawa Police Service.
Investigation Underway
On Monday, the Ottawa Police Service confirmed that an off-duty London police officer is being investigated in connection with a reported incident over the weekend. While officials have not disclosed details, media reports indicate that the officer in question is a high-ranking member of the force.
During a London Police Service Board meeting on Thursday, Chief Truong confirmed that an internal investigation will take place once the Ottawa probe concludes or, if charges are laid, after the court process is complete.
Suspension with Pay Sparks Debate
In an interview with CTV News, Truong directly addressed public concerns over the officer’s suspension with full pay.
“Under the CSPA (Community Safety and Policing Act), the act that governs misconduct for our members, I have the authority to respond and engage,” Truong explained. “However, it does not allow me to suspend and withhold pay in this specific case. There are certain circumstances where I can suspend without pay, but this is not one of them.”
Next Steps
As the Ottawa Police investigation continues, London’s police force will closely monitor developments before launching its own internal review. In the meantime, Truong remains committed to transparency and accountability, acknowledging public concern over the matter while emphasizing the legal limitations of his authority.
