Thousands of Muslim Londoners came together at the BMO Centre to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan and reflecting on the lessons learned during the holy month.
The youth in the community shared how Ramadan not only deepened their understanding of their religion but also imparted valuable life lessons they carry with them every day.
Youth Perspectives on Ramadan
Noor Ul-Haq, 16, remarked, “When I was younger, it was a fun event, but now I grasp the true essence of Ramadan and Eid.” He emphasized the importance of seeking positivity in every situation and being grateful for the outcomes, regardless of how they unfold.
Gesma Awad, 17, highlighted the significance of patience and taking each day as it comes, a lesson she learned during Ramadan’s peaceful and introspective period.
Eid Celebrations in London
The Eid prayers, hosted by the London Muslim Mosque, drew an estimated 10,000 attendees, followed by a festive market with various vendors and entertainment for children. London’s Muslim population, as per the 2021 census, stands at over 35,000 individuals.
Mehdi Abdullah, 15, expressed his joy for Eid as a time of family togetherness, where they gather, express gratitude for the fasting month’s blessings, and enjoy traditional meals while dressed in their finest attire.
Unity and Generosity During Ramadan
Hashem Ramadan, treasurer of the London Muslim Mosque, noted the heartwarming unity displayed by London’s Muslim community during Eid celebrations. He emphasized Ramadan as a month of peace, love, and generosity, fostering compassion towards those less fortunate.
A Newcomer’s Gratitude
Hafsa Amena, celebrating her first Eid in London since relocating from Hyderabad, India, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to enjoy the festivities with her family, marking the culmination of their efforts during Ramadan.
